AAUA Crises: Group Gives 4 Condtions to Suspend Nationwide Protest
According to the statement issue by a prominent member of the group, Comrade Adesina Tosin Nathaniel which states:
"We insist that the Government has no reason to hike Tuition, it has not even been able to Justify the fees it has received in the last six years. The fee hike has only exposed the irresponsibility of Government towards its own institution. It has shown how Government has consistently underfunded the institution."
"We insist that the new few regime is not only senseless and unaffordable, it points out to the commercialization of education which would make sure education is prized out of the reach of the poor. Already the poor has suffered several attacks from the anti-poor policies of this government of Rotimi Akeredolu, and cannot afford to bear this again."
"We join to reject this satanic fee hike by the Government and demand immediate reversal now.
OUR DEMANDS.
1) Immediate Reversal of the fees to the status quo.
2) Commitment of Government to Increased funding.
3) Transparency of University funds, and how it is spent
4) A bit by bit analysis of all hidden charges earlier collected on the school."

Many Injured as Police Opened Fire On Protesting AAUA Students in Akure
Eye witnesses disclosed that the police chief in charge of the uniform men said they have an order from the Governor of Ondo state, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu to stop the protest at all cost, hence the sporadic shooting.
“Four students are currently being rushed to the hospital as a result of different gunshot injuries sustained” a student disclosed to nigeriancablenewsonline.com
In 2012, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo state and then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate, said he will not increase tuition fees at the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAU) in Akungba-Akoko and Rufus Giwa Polytechnic (RUGIPOLY) in Owo, if elected in the October 20 governorship election.
The frontline lawyer assured workers of both institutions and teachers in the state that their allowances, which have not been paid by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, would be fully paid, if he becomes governor.
According to The Nation, the then ACN governorship spoke in Ayegunle-Akoko, where he was hosted by members of the Omoluabi Forum.
Responding to a question by a students’ leader, Mr Akeredolu said, “I know the importance of education. Although some states increased fees because they have no money, God has blessed us with oil wealth in Ondo State.
“Therefore, I say today that my government will not increase tuition fees. That is final. You can quote me on that.”
Six years down the line, Mr. Akeredolu who then lost to former governor Olusegun Mimiko now found himself in the saddle of government.
He has also approved an increment in the tuition fees of the state owned university.
It will be recalled that SUNSHINE HERALD had on Friday published the new fees approved for new and returning students of the institution.
According to the fees, new students admitted to study law would pay N200,000 while returning students are expected to pay N150,000.
Also fresh students from the school of Science/Sommasa are asked to pay N180,000 while those returning would pay N150,000.
N150,000 and N120,000 were approved for new and returning students respectively for those in Faculties of Art and Education.

Send all `authentic’ graduates to NYSC, VCs tell universities
The Committee of Vice-Chancellors (CVC)
has urged universities to upload the
names of all eligible graduates for the
2016 Batch `B’ of the National Youth
Service Corps (NYSC).
A statement by CVC on Tuesday in Abuja
said that the committee’s stance was
sequel to its meeting with the Director-
General of NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Sule Kazaure.
The statement was co-signed by Prof.
Adebiyi Daramola, CVC’s President and
Prof. Michael Faborode, the committee’s
Secretary-General.
NYSC had in a memo to universities
recently, directed them to cut their
mobilisation for the scheme by 60 per cent
due to financial constraints.
The CVC said that the stakeholders agreed
with NYSC that paucity of funds was
responsible for the slash in the percentage
of mobilisation.
It said that its meeting resolved “that all
authentic graduates of universities be
uploaded by universities for NYSC to
mobilise as appropriate.
“All universities are expected to comply
immediately and ensure that graduates of
part-time programmes and over-aged
graduates are not included in their list.
“The CVC and the Association of Vice-
Chancellors of Nigerian Universities
(AVCNU) plead with the government and
the National Assembly to provide
resources needed for full mobilisation to
stave off impending problem of partial
mobilisation.
“We appeal to all graduates and
prospective corps members to show
understanding and exercise restraint while
awaiting further directives from NYSC.’’
The statement said that the CVC meeting
with NYSC authorities was preceded by
one with the Executive Secretary of the
National Universities Commission on the
issue.

AAUA ASUU M.O.U WITH THE MANAGEMENT 2016
The Congress of ASUU-AAUA met today, 11th October, 2016, to discuss the outcome of the signing of the MoU between the University Administration/Council of Adekunke Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Adekunke Ajasin University Chapter, in relation to the withdrawal of service action by the Union, aimed at pushing for the payment of outstanding salary and deductions.
The Chairperson informed members that the MoU, which was ratified at the Congress meeting of Wednesday 5th October, 2016, had been signed by the designated signatories appointed to represent the two parties. Arising from this, the Congress resolved to IMMEDIATELY SUSPEND the withdrawal of service action by ASUU-AAUA that was commenced on 4th July, 2016, with the strong belief that the University Administration/Council will religiously abide by the provisions of the MoU, to avoid a resumption of the suspended action.
The Congress further discussed very important ancillary matters that touch on the good health and wellbeing of the University, and thereafter resolved as follows:
1. That the earlier resolution on the appointment of Deans and HODs should be reaffirmed. To this end, Congress condemned the appointment of acting HODs and Deans during the last withdrawal of service action, and further resolved that the appointment of Deans and HODs should be democratized not later than 7 working days after the suspension of the withdrawal of service action.
2. That in conformity with the earlier resolution of Congress, the idea of appointing contract staff to academic and directorial offices should be discontinued IMMEDIATELY, to allow tenured academic staff grow on the job and impact positively on the University.
3. That in line with the earlier resolutions of the Congress, the University Administration should desist from appointing academic members above 70 years of age. Congress noted that the continuous appointment of academics above 70 years is in total disregard to the ASUU/FGN 2009 Agreement and the Ondo State Government existing White Paper and official Gazette. Congress was of the opinion that this disregard must end forthwith.
4. That the University Administration should emplace the process for the 2015/2016 promotion exercise, with a view to giving members reasonable enough time to process their documents. Congress was also worried about the promotion criterion that requires academic staff to attend an international conference within a promotional year. This is in view of the financial difficulties being faced by members, and the inability of the University Administration to guarantee full sponsorship to members. Congress, therefore, resolved that the University Administration must continue to ensure full sponsorship of members to attend international conferences, and must be ready to drop this criterion if such sponsorship could no longer be guaranteed. Congress was of the opinion that disadvantaging members of the Union based on their inability to attend conferences due to lack of sponsorship must not be encouraged.
The Congress meeting, therefore, called on the University Administration to abide by these long-standing resolutions in the interest of industrial peace and harmony in the University. The Congress similarly stressed that the Union will not hesitate to use every legal instrument available to it to push for a total compliance with these resolutions in order for the University to remain virile, healthy, focused and progressive.
Solidarity forever
Aluta continua!

Arms: How EFCC Traces N4.75bn to Obanikoro’s Sons
The Task Force investigating the alleged diversion of
$2.1bn meant for arms procurement under the immediate
past administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has
embarked on a discrete investigation into the former
Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro.
It was gathered that the team of EFCC investigators had
traced the sum of N4.75bn to the account of Silva
McNamara Limited with Diamond Bank with links to the
family of the former minister.
A top operative of the commission, who confided in our
correspondent, said that the company had two sons of the
former minister on its board.
The names of the relatives on the company’s board are
Gbolahan Obanikoro and Babajide Obanikoro.
It was stated that the duo were on the board of the company
till 2014 when one Olalekan Ogunseye became the sole
signatory to the company’s account.
Investigations revealed that the funds were paid into the
McNamara account from the Central Bank of Nigeria
Imprest Account of the National Security adviser between
June 6, 2014 and December, 12, 2015.
The breakdown of the lodgements of funds into the account
during the six months period revealed that N200m was paid
into the account on June 6, 2014; N2bn on June 16, 2014;
N60m on July 6, 2014 and N7, 000m on July 7, 2014.
Other lodgements into the account within the period include
the payment of N1bn on July 30, 2014; N160m on August 8,
2014; N225m on August 22, 2014; N200m on November,
14, 2014 and N200m on December, 5, 2014.
The source said that the commission was probing the
payment of N4.75bn to McNamara because the funds were
released without any contractual evidence.
It was however stated that Obanikoro’s name was not
found in the transactions as he was not on the board of the
company.
It was stated that efforts are being made to unravel the
mystery behind the payment of the large amount of money
to the company which has two of his sons as members of
the board of directors.
Our correspondent could not get the Head of Media and
Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, to comment on
the story as the calls to his mobile telephone line did not
connect.
In his response, however, a media aide to Obanikoro, Mr.
Jonathan Eze, denied allegations that the former minister
was involved in any fraud.
He said all the allegations were mere speculations and
urged members of the public to treat them as such.
He said, “As far as Senator Obanikoro is concerned, these
are mere allegations that have not been proven and can
never be proved. The former minister insists that his
children were never directors at the company and were
never signatories.

President Buhari Declares Free Tertiary Education in Nigeria
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that there will
be free education for science, technology and education
students in tertiary institutions.
Buhari gave the assurance yesterday while presenting the
2016 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National
Assembly.
Buhari stressed that this would indeed mark a historic
milestone for us as a nation.
He said his administration would unveil a conditional cash
transfer programme for the poorest and most vulnerable.
The president said the full programme would be presented in
the coming weeks and that it would be home-grown public
primary school feeding.
“Furthermore, through the office of the Vice President, we
are working with various development partners to design an
implementable and transparent conditional cash transfer
program for the poorest and most vulnerable.
“This program will be implemented in phases. Already, the
compilation of registers of the poorest persons is ongoing,”
he said.
He explained that “in the coming weeks, we will present the
full programme which will include our home-grown public
primary school feeding and free education for science,
technology and education students in our tertiary
institutions.”
“Indeed, this will mark a historic milestone for us as a
nation,” he said.

Wonder as Gov. Mimiko’s Men Dump PDP For APC
Two former supporters of Ondo State
Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, Senator Ayo
Akinyelure, and Dr Pius Osunyikanmi, have
dumped the Peoples Democratic Party
(PDP) for the All Progressives Congress
(APC).
Akinyelure represented Ondo Central,
Mimiko’s senatorial district, in the 7th
National Assembly.
Osunyikanmi was Mimiko’s personal
assistant and commissioner for Health
under the late Governor Adebayo Adefarati.
He also served the governor in other
capacities such as special assistant, senior
special assistant and commissioner for
Education. He was special adviser on
International Relations to President
Goodluck Jonathan before becoming the
director-general of the Technical Aids Corp.
Akinyelure and Osunyinkami, in a statement
yesterday, said they left the PDP with their
supporters because of the need to support
the change agenda of the President
Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
The statement read: “We are most delighted
to announce our formal declaration for the
All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo
State. This declaration, which has ignited
the fire of passionate endorsements across
the state, followed our historic
disengagement from the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP).”
They said their decision was taken after
several months of wide consultations with
their esteemed leaders, constructive
constituents, fervent followers and very
distinguished admirers from the length and
breadth of Ondo State.
“The mood in Ondo State, as clearly
expressed in the last general election,
shows that the people truly want a change.
In spite of the fact that we have a PDP
government in the state, our people voted
massively for President Mohammadu Buhari
of the APC. That situation has not changed.
In fact, the calls for total change at all levels
of governance in the state are getting more
stringent due to the failure of the PDP-led
state government to deliver democracy
dividends to the people.

Universities Workers Plans Strike as FG Sacks 2000
The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities
has called for an indefinite strike on December 24, 2015 to
protest a recent decision of the Federal Government to sack
2,000 university workers across the country by January,
2016.
The National President of SSANU, Mr. Samson Ugwoke,
said during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday that the
National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, and the
National Universities Commission had written letters of
termination to 2,000 members of staff of the universities.
Ugwoke said that the senior staff union of the universities
had already dispatched letters to the Ministry of Education,
the NUC and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages
Commission to withdraw the letters of termination issued to
varsity workers of the University of Ilorin, Federal University
of Technology, Akure, Usman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto
and others.
He said that SSANU also urged the Education Ministry and
the other agencies to ensure immediate withdrawal of
similar letters to vice chancellors to terminate the
appointment of personnel of university staff primary
schools.
He said the letter dated December 17, 2015 also copied
President Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Senate,
Bukola Saraki, the Speaker of the House of Representatives,
Mr. Yakubu Dogara, the Minister of Labour and
Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige and others.
Ugwoke added that the 2,000 workers affected in the
planned retrenchment exercise were drawn from 31
universities and were employed by the councils of the
various institutions to make the requisite contribution to
educational development in the institutions and the society
over the years.
The SSANU leader noted that the directive to sack the
workers who are expected to leave service in January 2016
was contained in a circular said to have been written and
signed by a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Education,
Mr. E.O Fayemi, on behalf of the minister.
He stated further that the circular dated April 21, 2015, was
attached with a memorandum and report from the National
Salaries, Income and Wages Commission dated March 2014
and February 2014 respectively.
According to him, the commission responded to the circular
by directing the removal of personnel of staff schools and
other institutions affiliated to the universities from the
payroll.
He said, “The implementation of this directive would be a
gross violation and breach of the SSANU/FGN 2009
Agreement, which explicitly stated that the University shall
bear full capital and recurrent cost of University Staff
primary schools.
“It is further shocking to note that till date, the Federal
Ministry of Defence still funds the capital and recurrent
costs of over 100 Army Children Schools, Command
Children Schools, Navy Primary Schools and Air Force
Schools; while the Ministry of Police Affairs still funds its
Police Children Schools, all from the Federal Treasury.
“We are surprised that an agency of government, the
National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, could
continue with this callous, wicked, insensitive and ill-
intentioned agenda, despite our calls, letters, press
releases and publications on the issue.
“With the advent of the administration of President
Muhammadu Buhari, we had written series of public and
confidential letters on same with no positive response.”
He said that 90 per cent of the pupils of the university staff
schools were children of the staff of the institutions
stressing that the schools were established alongside other
academic components of the universities in some cases.
The unionist said SSANU had to give the December 24,
2015 deadline to the Federal Government as part of the
efforts to prevent the over 2000 workers of the universities
from being sacked.
Several efforts by Saturday PUNCH to get the response of
ASUU National President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, was resisted
because he said, “I am out of the country and you don’t
expect me to answer you from abroad.”
Also when contacted, the Special Assistant (Media) to the
Minister of State for Education, Anthony Akuneme, directed
our correspondent to the office of the Education Minister,
Adamu Adamu.
But several calls and SMS to the Assistant Director of Press
in the Education Ministry, Abdul Onu, were not replied.

Five students of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka,
are now in the custody of the Nigeria Police, Abraka

A female student, identified as Omojevbe Tracy Ngozi, was

Narrating how they were arrested, the Police Public
Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Celestina Kalu, in a
statement, said the incident happened on December 14 at
about 6:30 p.m.
She said the DPO, Abraka Division, received a tip-off that
the sound of a lady's cry was coming from an uncompleted
building in a bush around the railway line in Abraka.

This is because the recent activities of these organizations run contrary to the extant rules and regulations of the university. Students are to remain calm. He said some of the perpetrators have been arrested. The university management is on top of the situation.
